Bed Bugs, Skunks and Other Varmints in My Closet

Not all claims involve fire, smoke or water damage, and this one-hour interactive course focuses on some of the odd situations that effect textiles. This one-hour program discusses bed bugs, textiles affected by skunk odor, and bio hazardous contaminants that result from bats, raccoons and other animals.

While restoration can oftentimes be difficult in these circumstances, it is not entirely impossible to restore items to pre-loss condition. All attendees of this class will gain a better understanding of what can be done to restore textiles with these unique contaminates and circumstances that can lead to a covered loss.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain how to deal with bed bugs in bedding and other areas
  • Understand the complications of restoring textiles affected by skunk spray, urine, feces and blood
  • Understand the benefits of using a qualified textile restoration specialist to lower and control restoration costs

Hoarding: An Extreme Claim Situation

Compulsive hoarding (or pathological collecting) is considered a clinical syndrome that affects an estimated three million Americans. The actual number is believed to be much higher due to the difficulty that those who experience this condition have in asking for help. Clearly there’s a potential impact for insurance professionals.

When property loss occurs in a home of a hoarder, it may result in an extreme claim that needs to be managed carefully. In this two-hour interactive class, we will focus on understanding what hoarding is and the different levels of hoarding. We will look at liability concerns of insuring hoarders and learn how to identify a hoarding situation before the carrier agrees to insure the property. Students will develop the necessary skills to identify when and to what degree hoarding is occurring, and learn how to work with a hoarder during the claim process. At the conclusion, we will outline suggested hoarding protocols that, if implemented by all restoration providers and claims professionals, will result in controlling and/or lowering restoration costs.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand what hoarding is and recognize the various levels of hoarding
  • Comprehend liability concerns of insured hoarders
  • Successfully manage a hoarding claim to lower and control restoration costs

Ethics for Insurance Professionals - 2015

The critical issue in ethics, in its most basic sense, is the conduct of people. It is the quality of our character and attitude that forms everything that we do. An essential component of ethics would seem to be going beyond self-interest or company interest and incorporating the rights and interests of the client. Ethics for Insurance Professionals is an activity-based course that meets the requirements of providing ethics instruction.

In this three-hour interactive class, we will discuss the ways in which we are “at our professional best” and challenge ourselves to be beyond reproach, always. The program identifies ethical issues of the insurance business, explains why ethical behavior matters to insurance professionals, and provides practice making ethical decisions in sales and claims situations. Students will learn from each other through the use of scenarios relevant to their working environment. The course covers the basics from the history of ethics, through common ethical situations in both the sales and claims environments, and finishes with a discussion of how students can lead by ethical example.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Identify ethical issues of the insurance business
  • Explain why ethical behavior matters for insurance professionals
  • Practice making ethical decisions in sales and claims situations
